Challenge 👀
Cooking at home can be a stressful task, especially when you got an entire family to take care of. Besides, it is also time-consuming to keep track of all the expiration dates of the ingredients, as well as to make sure to come up with good recipes while not being repetitive. Our family has been relying heavily on sticky notes to keep track of the ingredients’ freshness, and YouTube to search for new recipes, yet we don’t find these to be sustainable and organized solutions. This, therefore, led to our research question👇
How can we develop an app that can act as a smart kitchen agent for the family to manage the trivial kitchen chores in one place?
Solution 😎
We designed an app, Pantry, that could assist people with kitchen chores from front to end.
1. Personalized Recipe Discovery
-
A smooth and detailed onboarding process with questions about cooking habits, family size, and dietary preferences, is designed.
-
By doing so, we can get an initial user profiling and therefore recommend the recipes that users will actually like right off the bat.
2. Shopping List Autogeneration
-
Once the users click a specific recipe, they will clearly see not only step-by-step instructions but also the ingredients that are being used.
-
For those ingredients that are not yet in the pantry, users can directly add them into the shopping list.
3. Receipt Scanner
-
Pantry is able to convert receipt (images) to a long list of items (text) in one tap.
-
The scanner will automatically record the item name, purchase date, purchase location, and more.
-
The scanned list is also editable so that users can manually remove/add items that have been added/missed mistakenly by the system.
4. Ingredient Tracking
-
The freshness of ingredients is calculated according to the average shelf life of each food item, starting from the day that the item is added into Pantry.
-
It can being categorized into three levels: red representing close to expire, yellow nearly expire, and green far from expiration.
-
The three levels are entirely customizable for both the color code as well as the the range of days each color represents.
-
In order for the expiration indicator to be accurate, the users should scan their receipts as soon as they bought the foods.
